Modern car keys have evolved into intelligent remotes, allowing for locking/unlocking doors, closing windows, arming alarms, and communicating with the immobilizer. That's why, in case of key loss, simply duplicating its physical blade is not enough. It is also necessary to code the buttons and the specific code recognized by the ignition switch. Without this coding, the driver won't be able to access the interior of the vehicle or start the engine. This is where programming comes to the rescue.

Coding a key with an immobilizer can be more complex than programming a remote for the central locking system. A warning light on the dashboard during the engine start-up can indicate an issue with the immobilizer.

There are several situations where coding a key or remote may be necessary. This includes instances where the remote is lost, damaged by water, or suffers mechanical damage. Additionally, electronic malfunctions can prevent doors from opening. Buttons on the remote can fail or connections on the control board may become detached. While the longevity of these devices is usually high, it's important to remember that some vehicles can remain in service for two decades or more.
Having a spare key makes the situation less problematic. The engine can still be started, and access to the cabin remains possible. However, losing the only key to the car presents a much larger problem.
Several methods for programming the immobilizer and central locking system
The choice of coding method depends on which functionality of the car key is damaged. For example, if a warning light with a key symbol appears on the dashboard during an engine start attempt, it indicates a problem with the immobilizer. If the issue is with door unlocking, the communication with the transponder responsible for controlling the locks needs to be addressed. Mechanics usually use several methods during coding, including:
• Obtaining the code by connecting a specialized diagnostic tester to the OBD port. This process provides the pin necessary for coding both old and new remotes.
• Creating a code copy from an additional key.
• In some cases, the code required for programming the remote can be obtained from the factory-installed radio on the car's dashboard.
• Sometimes, the car key can be coded using a sequence of button presses. In this case, manufacturers base the process on various principles. This method mostly applies to self-decoding and subsequent programming of the same key.
Does changing the key battery cause the car key to lose its code?
Modern car keys are battery-operated devices. What happens when the battery is changed? Drivers often ask about the possibility of losing the code. However, manufacturers have prepared remotes for this eventuality. After replacing the battery, key coding should not be necessary. The remotes should remain compatible with the vehicle.
In rare cases, the car key may be damaged when it has had a flat battery installed for an extended period. This can lead to decoding, or the remote may be damaged due to a faulty battery. If the key fails to communicate with the car's electronics after installing a new battery, check the following:
• Sometimes, when changing the battery, it is inserted in the reverse direction. In such cases, the remote won't function properly.
• If the key does not communicate with the vehicle, it can be connected to a diagnostic tester. Error codes can help identify the type of malfunction and assist in resolving it promptly.
How much does key coding cost? How long does coding take?
Key coding is not an expensive procedure. The cost of the service usually does not exceed 200 PLN. However, it's important to differentiate between two aspects. A new key requires coding of the pin for controlling the lock, the immobilizer coding, as well as pairing it with the anti-theft system. Without communication with these transponders, normal use of the car will not be possible. Additionally, the price of key coding may increase if the mechanic needs to replace key components.
Of course, the above information refers to the case where the driver decides to program the key outside of an authorized service (ASO). Authorized stations produce complete keys based on the vehicle's VIN number. This means that the device, once ordered, arrives at the dealership already coded for the specific vehicle model. The encoded code in it allows it to be used for vehicle entry immediately. Unfortunately, ASO services increase costs. The price of replacing a lost key at ASO will certainly exceed 1000 PLN.
How long does key coding take?
It's often a matter of minutes, at most an hour during pilot repairs. The waiting time for a ready-made key from the factory can vary from a few days to even a week or two.
The set of car keys has a fixed code. Therefore, sometimes in case of losing them, it's better not only to duplicate an additional remote. Specialists recommend that, for safety reasons, it's better to communicate with the onboard electronics and, as a first step, change the immobilizer pin. In this case, each key must be retrained to the new security setting.
