Car cylinder head regeneration

Car cylinder head regeneration

Regeneration becomes necessary mainly in cases of cylinder head overheating or engine overhaul. In such situations, the engine loses compression and power. The key is to work on the engine's top surface to ensure that it meets the engine block on the flattest possible plane.

Tips

  • Disassembly of the cylinder head and assessment of its condition.

  • Working on individual components and mating surfaces, followed by cleaning.

  • Adjusting the valve clearance when it is done mechanically, not hydraulically.

  • Reassembling the cylinder head.

Scope of services

  • The cylinder head plays a crucial role in the engine's performance and power. When opting for this service, choose a workshop that specializes in cylinder head repair and regeneration.

When is Car Cylinder Head Regeneration Performed?

The cylinder head plays an extremely important role in the operation of both passenger and heavy-duty vehicle engines. It constitutes the upper part of the engine, sealing off the combustion chamber enclosed within the engine block. This ensures compression and the engine's capabilities. Lack of compression leads to a significant loss of power.

Cylinder head regeneration is required in several scenarios. It is needed when there is a loss of sealing due to gasket damage. Additionally, regeneration may be necessary if the cylinder head cracks. While gasket damage and loss of sealing in 90% of cases result from engine overheating, cracks can also become apparent during the replacement of the timing belt. Mechanics are familiar with such cases!

What is Involved in Car Cylinder Head Regeneration and Planning?

Regeneration is a multi-stage process. It involves disassembly, cleaning, and repairing minor cracks. However, the key step is planning, which refers to milling the surface to achieve the flattest possible layer. The mechanic then installs gaskets and valves, as well as mechanically adjusts the valve clearance. After disassembling the engine, it may become apparent that the regeneration should also include valve seat milling. This is a common issue in cars with engines fueled by LPG.

Cylinder Head Repair and Checking for Seal Integrity

Regenerating a leaking cylinder head can be a serious issue. Often, the problem is not solely caused by gasket failure. Sometimes, the cause is a crack in the cylinder head. In such cases, simple milling of the cylinder head will not be enough. Components made of cast iron or aluminum need to be welded. This procedure is not cheap and usually costs between 300 and 1000 PLN. It's worth noting that welding is not always effective due to the weakened thermal resistance of the component. Sometimes, it is better to replace the damaged cylinder head with a used or new one.

How much does Car Cylinder Head Regeneration for Internal Combustion Engines cost?

Before disassembling the engine's top part, the workshop may have difficulty determining the repair costs. Only after separating the cylinder head from the engine block can the extent of the damage be precisely identified. This procedure is essential, as the final cost of the service largely depends on the condition of the cylinder head. Additionally, one should keep in mind that the work is often combined with a timing belt replacement, whether it is a belt or a chain. This widens the range of costs.

Milling or, in other words, planning, often costs no more than 150 PLN. However, this is just one of the procedures that the mechanic must carry out. The disassembly and reassembly of the engine usually cost between 400 and 500 PLN, and the damage may also involve milling the valve seats, replacing valve guides, or welding. A workshop specializing in professional regeneration will charge from 1000 to even 2000 PLN for a comprehensive service.
